BMX in the Canary Islands in winter: weather, tracks and travel
January weather, tracks in Tenerife and Gran Canaria and travel tips for a camp.
Guide updated
Quick answer: In January, the coast of Tenerife and Gran Canaria averages highs of about 21 °C and lows of about 15 °C, with 3 to 4 rainy days in the month (AEMET, 1981-2010). For BMX racing, the documented option is Tenerife: San Miguel de Abona, La Laguna (La Vega) and Adeje. Gran Canaria has a municipal pump track in Las Palmas, but we have not confirmed an operating racing track there. There are no published hourly rates: ask the club or council.
If you want sun in midwinter, the Canary Islands are the warmest part of Spain. The key is picking the right island: racing is in Tenerife, and Gran Canaria works as a pump track extra.

How to book track time
No published rate
Email the club with your dates, the number and age of riders, and whether you need the start gate, a coach, insurance and floodlights. BIEMEX lists bmxsanmigueldeabona@gmail.com and BMX T-Riders contacto@bmxtriders.es. If you're not sure who to ask, the Canary Islands Cycling Federation can point you in the right direction.

Getting there with your bike and island-hopping
Each airline has its own rules. For example, Iberia asks for the bike to be boxed, pedals off, bars turned and tyres deflated, up to 23 kg (32 kg with a fee). Add the bike to your booking and confirm it on every leg.
Groups on the ferry
Baleària also sails direct from Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in about 100 minutes, depending on the sailing. It takes bikes, one per passenger, declared when booking, and handles groups of 10 or more with a custom quote. Check times and conditions for your date.
Checklist before booking
- Written confirmation from the club or council, with hours and gate use.
- A valid federation licence or insurance.
- Bike accepted on every flight and on the ferry if you change islands.
- A pump track plan B if a track closes for works or rain.
