BMX in Catalonia in winter: weather and tracks

January weather in Barcelona from AEMET, racing tracks in Terrassa, Horta, Sant Andreu, Mataró and Vila-sana, and how to book time.

Guide updated

Quick answer: In January, the Barcelona coast averages highs of 13.6 °C and lows of 4.7 °C, with 3.7 rainy days and 151 hours of sunshine (AEMET, Barcelona airport, 1981-2010). It is cooler than Alicante or the Canaries, but has the densest cluster of racing tracks near a major airport: Terrassa, Barcelona (Horta), Sant Andreu de la Barca and Mataró, plus Vila-sana in Lleida. There is no published hourly track rate: ask the club.

Catalonia isn't the warmest destination, but it's the easiest for hopping between tracks: four racing tracks in Barcelona province and a big airport. Great if you want track variety more than sunshine.

January weather

According to AEMET's climate normals for Barcelona airport, January brings cold mornings and mild afternoons. Ride from mid-morning to mid-afternoon and bring a warm layer. Inland (Terrassa, Vila-sana) is usually colder than the coast.

How to book track time

No published rate

No club publishes an hourly rate for teams. The hourly prices on the Velòdrom website are for football, not BMX.

Email the club with your dates, the number and age of riders, and whether you need the start gate, a coach and insurance. If you're not sure who to ask, the Catalan Cycling Federation (+34 93 301 24 44) can help.

Checklist before booking
  • Written confirmation from the club, with hours and gate use.
  • A valid federation licence or insurance.
  • Warm clothing: January mornings are cold.
  • A flight to Barcelona-El Prat (BCN) with the bike added to the booking.
