BMX protective gear: knee pads, shin guards, gloves and more

Which pads to wear when starting BMX and which are required for racing.

Published · Updated

The basics

  • Shin guards: pinned pedals hurt; protect your shins.
  • Knee pads: a must at the skatepark.
  • Gloves: grip and palm protection in falls.
  • Flat-sole shoes with good grip.

For racing

Races require a full-face helmet, full-finger gloves, long sleeves and long pants (or equivalent protection). Check your federation's rulebook.

Extras

Elbow pads, padded hip shorts and, for big jumps, a neck brace.
