BMX first steps: stance, braking and balance
The technical basics you need before trying tricks.
Published · Updated
Attack position
Stand on level pedals, knees and elbows bent, eyes forward. Everything in BMX starts here.
Controlled braking
Practise braking on flat ground with the rear brake without locking the wheel, shifting your weight back.
Balance
Try a track stand for a few seconds. It builds low-speed control.
Pumping
On a pump track or small rollers, push the bike down the backsides and unweight on the way up to gain speed without pedalling.
Always wear a helmet. Start away from traffic and, if possible, at a club or school.
